What Do Kids Learn in Ballroom & Latin Dance Classes?

When parents think about dance classes for kids, Ballet, Jazz, or Hip-Hop may be the first styles that come to mind. Ballroom and Latin dance offer something a little different: children learn not only how to dance, but also how to move with another person, listen to music, communicate through movement, and become more confident on the dance floor. At Dualis Dance House in Cold Spring, NY, our kids ballroom and Latin dance program introduces young dancers to these skills in an environment that is structured, welcoming, and most importantly… fun!

They Learn More Than Dance Steps

Of course, kids learn actual Ballroom and Latin dancing. Depending on their age and level, students may be introduced to dances such as Cha Cha, Rumba, Jive, Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot and more. Memorizing steps is only one piece of learning to dance. Students also begin developing coordination, balance, rhythm, posture, musicality, and body awareness. As they progress, they learn how individual movements fit together to create complete dances. For younger students, that might begin with recognizing rhythm and becoming comfortable moving to music. Older or more experienced dancers can begin developing technique, partnering skills, choreography, and performance quality.

They Learn How to Dance With a Partner

One of the things that makes ballroom dance so unique is partnering! Students learn how two dancers communicate through movement. They practice leading and following, responding to another dancer, maintaining their own movement while working as part of a partnership, and adapting to different partners. And no, your child does not need to bring a partner to class, learning to dance with different classmates is actually an important part of the experience.

They Build Confidence

Dance gives children an opportunity to practice something new, make mistakes, improve, and eventually accomplish something that once felt difficult. That process can be incredibly rewarding. Confidence doesn't necessarily mean becoming the loudest or most outgoing person in the room. Sometimes it simply means being willing to try a new step, dance with someone new, perform in front of other people, or walk onto the dance floor knowing, “I can do this.” We love watching those moments happen!

They Learn Social Skills in a Completely Different Way

Partner dancing naturally requires communication, cooperation, awareness, and respect. Students learn how to ask someone to dance, work together, take turns leading and following when appropriate, and interact with different personalities. These skills are woven naturally into the experience rather than being taught as a separate lesson.

They Learn to Actually Enjoy Dancing

We want our students to develop into strong dancers, but we also want them to discover something they can enjoy for the rest of their lives. Ballroom and Latin dancing can grow with them, from childhood classes and performances to competitions, social dancing, weddings, and simply being the person who feels comfortable getting onto a dance floor.

There is no single type of child who belongs in ballroom dance.

Some students love performing. Some love mastering technique. Some are naturally social. Others take time to come out of their shell. Our goal is to give each dancer room to develop at their own pace while still feeling like part of a community.
